Summary: The Monkees face several obstacles on their way to becoming Roman Catholics.
Note:   This is the fourth story in my "Led By The Spirit" Christian Monkees series, where the Monkees and the angel Elizabeth fight the forces of evil.  If you are not familiar with this series, please go back through the archives and read the previous stories; Thy Kingdom Come, And Lead Us Not Into Temptation and Revelations and Truths.  Since this is a Christian Monkees story, the occult elements in this story will not be shown in a good light.  If that disturbs you then please, with all due respect, do not read this story.  Peace and Thank you.
Author's Note: I'm sorry for the long wait between chapters.    A quick recap:  The Monkees are taking religion lessons to join the Roman Catholic faith.  Satan has hired the bandit El Diablo (of It's A Nice Place To Visit fame) to keep people away from a witchcraft school he's building in the desert.  Meanwhile, the Monkees have opened for The Who with mixed results, and now the Angel Elizabeth and Margaret (who's working undercover at the school) make a troubling discovery.

The next morning, Sunday, The Monkees, Elizabeth and Darlene went to mass at St. Mark’s.  After breakfast at the pad, they got ready for a bible lesson.  Even though they had gone to a later mass, the guys and Darlene kept yawning and looked tired from the show last night.  The angel noticed this, and put a hand on Micky’s shoulder.

“Why don’t you five take a nap first before we start the lesson?”  She asked. “That show took a lot out of you.”

“Thanks, sweetheart, that would be nice.”  Micky said with a tired smile.

“Thanks, Elizabeth.”  The others told her.

“Have a blessed sleep.”  The angel replied.

So the Monkees all went into their bedrooms and Darlene lay down on the living room couch.  Elizabeth sat down on a chair near her and waited until they all were asleep…except Mike.

Silently, the angel floated up the stairs and into the bedroom Mike and Micky shared. She found Mike laying on his bed, but with his eyes open.

Mike looked up when he saw her, but Elizabeth motioned for him to be quiet. He nodded and sat up in his bed, putting his feet on the floor.

The angel held out her hands and Mike took them and stood up.  Suddenly, he found himself and the angel standing on the beach about 100 yards from the pad.

“I was hoping to get a chance to talk to you privately.”  Mike said.

“I know.”  Elizabeth replied, “As you’ve probably guessed, there’s more than what I told you all last night.”

“What else did Julia and Gwen say, Elizabeth?”  Mike asked quietly.

“They realize the others don’t know you’re the father of Julia’s baby.”  The angel replied, “And they’re threatening to tell them and your church if you don’t go and live with Julia.”

Mike turned to look at the crashing surf coming on to the shore.  For a brief moment he wished the tide would carry him away and he wouldn’t have to deal with this or anything else ever again.

“What did you tell them?”  Mike replied, still looking out onto the ocean.

“I told them it might hurt your relationship with them in the short term, but since you four have been through so much already and came through it, you would all survive this.” The angel replied.

“Would we?”  Mike asked, looking back at Elizabeth. “This is serious.  I committed the sin or fornication. I’m helping bring in a new life that will be raised evil.  I’m a descendent of St. Thomas and I’m going to be the father of a future witch!”

He grabbed Elizabeth by the shoulders. “Tell me what I should do!”

“I told you before, Mike. Wait until you’re confirmed, when your studies are over, then go and see her.” She replied. “You’ve only got a few more weeks.”

“Will they…Julia and Gwen…give me those few weeks?”  Mike asked.

“I don’t know, Mike.”  The angel replied, “But Julia only has a few more months before she gives birth.”

Mike let go of the angel’s shoulders. “I have to see her before then, try to convince her to leave Satan and come home with me…”  His voice trailed off.

“What is it, Mike?” Elizabeth asked.

“I’m forgetting about Margaret.”  Mike replied, “She’s in trouble too.”

“She’s safe for the moment.”  The angel replied, “I’m going to go see her now.”

“Good,” Mike nodded, “Please try to bring her back. I…don’t want anything to happen to her either.”

The angel didn’t need her powers to see Mike cared for both Julia and Margaret, and it would take a lot of prayers to find the answer to this problem.

“I’ll ask her again.”  Elizabeth promised, “But I can’t force her. Let’s go back to the pad.”

Mike nodded and the two of them found themselves back in Mike and Micky’s bedroom. Micky was softly snoring. Elizabeth gently sat Mike down on his bed and kissed him on the forehead, then disappeared.

Mike realized that now was a good chance to leave the pad, but as soon as he stood up, he became very sleepy. He sat down again and despite himself lay down on the bed and was fast asleep.

Margaret was seated behind an old oak desk in the drab office she had been given at the witch’s school.  It was mostly empty, just a few bookcases, a couch, Margaret’s ‘nurse’s’ things and a few books. Another door led to a small bedroom with a bed, table and sink. So far no one had questioned her too closely about being there. Making use of what time she had before she was discovered, she was looking over some very old books, trying to find out what she could about other witchcraft schools. She wasn’t having much luck.  Suddenly, there was a knock on the door.

“Come in.”  She said, taking a hold of the holy water bottle that was sitting on her lap.

Elizabeth quietly came into the room.

Margaret almost cried out, but caught herself. She quickly got up from her chair, ran over to the angel and gave her a big hug.

“You shouldn’t be here.” She whispered in Elizabeth’s ear.

“Neither should you.”  The angel whispered back, “Don’t worry, no one can hear us.”

The two pulled apart. “What an office.”  Elizabeth remarked, looking around.

“I know.” Margaret replied, shaking her head, “The whole building seems to be like this. Don’t these witches believe in electricity?”  She asked, indicating the oil lamp on her desk, which didn’t give much light in the room.  “But they do have running water at least.”

“They like things dark and intimidating.”  The angel replied, “So, have you found anything yet?”

“Not too much.”  Margaret admitted, “I try not to ask too many questions, but I did found out that the school will be opening in a few weeks and the novice witches will be arriving soon.”

“That doesn’t give us much time.”  Elizabeth replied. “When this school opens there will be so much evil power here it will literally take an act of God to knock it down.”

“How is everyone up north?” Margaret asked.

“Fine. Worried sick about you, but fine.”  The angel replied, shaking her head.

“I’ve been trying to stay out of the way.”  Margaret said, “But I’ll have to do more searching around to find out how to destroy this place.”

“As the nurse, you’ll be able to talk to people if they fall sick or injured.”  Elizabeth replied.

“That’s true,” Margaret replied, “Maybe then I...”

Margaret was interrupted by another knock on the door.  She looked over at the door, and then at Elizabeth, but the angel had vanished.

“Come in.”  Margaret said, swallowing hard.

The door swung open and Gwen entered, followed by the disgraced witch Synthia, who was holding Gwen’s hand. Margaret’s mouth went dry when she recognized the two. She hoped the witches wouldn’t remember her.

“Is this the nurse’s office?”  Gwen asked.

“It is, how can I help you?”  Margaret replied.

“My tummy hurts.”  Synthia replied, looking at the floor. Synthia had lost an important spell book which was then destroyed by the Order of St. Michael, so Satan had given her the mind of a child.

“Come over here and lay down on the couch, while I get something for you.”  Margaret said.

“Well, you look after her.”  Gwen told Margaret, “I’ve got more work to do.”

“What work do you do here?”  Margaret asked her.

“Cleaning lady.”  Gwen said with a smirk. “I know more spells than a lot of these witches here, and yet the master made me a cleaning lady.”  Gwen suddenly put her hand to her mouth. “Please don’t tell him I said that.”

“I won’t.”  Margaret replied, “What happens in this office, stays in this office.”

“Thank you.”  Gwen replied, looking relieved. “She’ll be ok?”  Pointing to Synthia.

“She’ll be fine.” Margaret reassured her.

“Good.  Thanks again.”  Gwen replied, as she left the room.

“You’re welcome.”  Margaret replied, shutting the door behind her and breathing a sigh of relief.

“My tummy hurts.”  Synthia said again from the couch.

“Ok, I’ll get something for that.” Margaret answered.

She went over to her bag and pulled out an antacid tablet, put it in an empty cup then went into the next room to fill up the glass with water.  Sitting on the bed waiting for her was Elizabeth.

“Did they recognize you?”  The angel asked.

“No, I don’t think so.”  Margaret replied, filling the glass with water from the spigot, “But it just would have to be them that came here, wouldn’t it?”

“Well, this will be your opportunity to find out more about this place.” Elizabeth replied.

Margaret nodded and went back into the other room with her glass.  She asked Synthia to sit up and then handed her the glass of water with the antacid bubbling inside.

“Drink this, it will help your tummy ache.”  Margaret said.

Synthia looked at the bubbling water, “Wow, look at the bubbles!”

“Yeah, it’s a special potion to cure tummy aches.” Margaret replied, “Drink up!”

Synthia took a sip, made a face, and then quickly drank the rest of the liquid down.

“That was awful!”  She exclaimed when she was done.

“Sometimes potions can taste bad.”  Margaret admitted, putting the glass back on the table. Then she sat down on the couch next to Synthia.

“So, what do you do here at the school?”  Margaret asked. “How did you get your tummy ache?”

“I work in the kitchens way down below here.”  Synthia replied, “I was sampling some frog legs and didn’t realize they weren’t cooked until it was too late.”

“Yeah, that would give you a tummy ache alright.”  Margaret agreed. “You say the kitchens are down below us?”

“Yeah, it’s so dark down there and it smells.”  Synthia said.

“It smells, you say?”  Margaret asked.

“Yeah, like sulfer.”  Synthia replied. “And the walls are so thick and black in color like these walls,” She continued, pointing at the wall. The witch rubbed her stomach. “Can I lay down?”

“Yes, of course.”  Margaret replied, getting up and putting Synthia’s legs onto the couch. “You just lie there and rest. You’ll feel better soon.”

“Thank you.”  Synthia said as she put her head down.  She then looked closely at Margaret.  “You know, you kinda look familiar.”

“Oh, I just got here.”  Margaret replied with a smile, “I haven’t really met any other witches yet. Now get some rest, I’ll be in the other room.”

Synthia nodded her head and closed her eyes.  Margaret went back into the other room where Elizabeth was still waiting and closed the door.

“Did you hear what she said?”  Margaret asked her, “These walls must be made of volcanic rock.”

The angel placed her hand on the nearest wall.  “It’s made of black granite, the world’s hardest rock.” She said after a moment, staring at the wall her hand was touching, “But the stones seem to have a lot of quartz, feldspar and other minerals inside them too.”

“So how are we going to tear down this place?”  Margaret asked.

Elizabeth removed her hand from the wall and shook her head, unable to answer the question.
